Wyclef Jean (born October 17, 1969, in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti) is a Haitian rapper, musician, producer, and philanthropist. He is renowned for his dynamic fusion of hip-hop, reggae, traditional Haitian music, and politically conscious lyrics.

Early Life

Jean’s family emigrated from Haiti to Brooklyn, New York, when he was a child and later settled in Newark, New Jersey. He graduated from Vailsburg High School in Newark in 1988 and pursued higher education at Eastern Nazarene College and Five Towns College. 

Career with The Fugees

In the early 1990s, Jean co-founded the influential hip-hop group The Fugees alongside Lauryn Hill and Pras Michel. The group’s 1996 album, The Score, achieved critical acclaim and commercial success, featuring hits like “Killing Me Softly” and “Ready or Not.” The Score won two Grammy Awards and solidified The Fugees’ place in music history.

Solo Career

Following the group’s disbandment, Jean embarked on a solo career, releasing several albums that showcased his versatility and commitment to social issues. Notable albums include:

  • The Carnival (1997): Jean’s debut solo album blends hip-hop with Caribbean and Latin influences.
  • The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book (2000): This album features collaborations with artists across genres and highlights Jean’s eclectic musical style.
  • Masquerade (2002): An album reflecting on personal and global themes, continuing Jean’s tradition of genre-blending.
  • Carnival Vol. II: Memoirs of an Immigrant (2007): This album, a sequel to his debut, explores themes of immigration and identity.
  • Carnival III: The Fall and Rise of a Refugee (2017): Marking the 20th anniversary of his solo debut, this album features a mix of contemporary sounds and traditional influences.

Philanthropy and Advocacy

Beyond his musical achievements, Jean is recognized for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in Haiti. He founded the Yéle Haiti Foundation to provide humanitarian aid and assistance to his home country. In 2010, following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Jean announced his candidacy for the Haitian presidency, seeking to bring about positive change. His bid was eventually disqualified.
