Clinton Benoit to Introduce “Konpa Metal” With December Album Release

“The Beat Was Funky” will launch a new fusion of Haitian konpa and heavy metal

A new sound bringing the rhythmic drive of Haitian konpa together with the force of heavy metal is set to arrive in December 2026. Musician and bandleader Clinton Benoit is preparing to introduce the style, which he calls Konpa Metal, through his upcoming album, The Beat Was Funky.

The project brings together musicians with experience in two distinct traditions. Under Benoit’s leadership, they combine konpa’s dance pulse with heavy metal’s powerful guitar sound and intensity, aiming to create a fusion with its own character.

Konpa has been a defining part of Haitian popular music for generations. The genre developed in the 1950s, and in 2025 UNESCO inscribed the Compas of Haiti on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.  That recognition reflects konpa’s deep cultural place in Haiti and the communities that carry its music and dance forward.

Benoit’s Konpa Metal project looks toward a new chapter in that continuing evolution. Its stated aim is to retain konpa’s movement and rhythmic foundation while adding the edge, volume and guitar-driven energy associated with heavy metal. The fusion also brings musicians from different musical backgrounds together to share their approaches and expand what listeners may expect from both styles.

With The Beat Was Funky, Benoit invites audiences to hear the first full expression of Konpa Metal. The album is scheduled for release in December 2026. More than a new record, it introduces a musical direction built around the meeting of two sounds—and Benoit’s vision for where that meeting can lead.
