Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Born on October 4, 1969, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Jean Hérard Richard, popularly known as Richie, exhibited a profound passion for music from a young age. Growing up in Cap-Haïtien, he immersed himself in the vibrant local music scene, drawing inspiration from renowned orchestras such as Tropicana d’Haïti and Septentrional. His early exposure to these musical influences laid the foundation for his illustrious career.

Formation of Early Bands

In his teenage years, Richie demonstrated leadership and musical prowess by forming his first band, Power X, at Lycée Philippe Guerrier. This endeavor showcased his burgeoning talent and set the stage for future musical projects. In 1990, he co-founded the band Fashion, which gained local acclaim by recording jingles for Radio 4VKB in Cap-Haïtien—jingles that resonate with listeners today. 

Transition to Compas Music

Upon relocating to the United States, Richie pursued studies in Music Technology at Broward Community College. Initially exploring genres like punk and heavy metal, his musical journey was pivotal when he embraced Compas, Haiti’s quintessential musical style. In 1992, he co-founded the band Tah-Paj alongside notable musicians such as Arly Larivière and Gazzman Couleur. This venture marked Richie’s deepening commitment to promoting and evolving Haitian music. 

Rise with Zenglen

Richie’s breakthrough came in 1997 when he joined the esteemed band Zenglen. His exceptional skills as a drummer, composer, and producer propelled the band to new heights. He produced several of Zenglen’s acclaimed albums, including Easy Konpa, Let It Groove, and 5e Vitès.” His tenure with Zenglen solidified his reputation as a maestro in the Haitian music industry. 

Establishing KLASS

In 2011, Richie embarked on a new chapter by forming the band KLASS. With a vision to innovate while honoring traditional Compas roots, KLASS quickly garnered a dedicated fan base. Under Richie’s leadership, the band released successful albums such as “Fè l Vini Avan” (2013), “Fè l Ak Tout Kè w” (2016), and “Ret Nan Liy Ou” (2019). These works exemplify his commitment to musical excellence and cultural authenticity.

Beyond his performances, Richie’s contributions as a composer and producer have left an indelible mark on Haitian music. He has collaborated with many artists, enriching the industry with his innovative arrangements and compositions.
