A Night of Legends, Surprises, and Fan Favorites
This year’s class reflects a blend of classic rock icons and genre-defying trailblazers from Cyndi Lauper to Outkast. The 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees have been revealed, offering a compelling mix of legendary rock acts and pioneering innovators from outside the traditional rock mold. The announcement was made during the live broadcast of “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night” on American Idol on April 27 and features seven performers who will join music’s most prestigious ranks this fall.
This year’s class includes:
- Bad Company
- Chubby Checker
- Joe Cocker
- Cyndi Lauper
- Outkast
- Soundgarden
- The White Stripes
The inclusion of Cyndi Lauper, the only female solo artist in this year’s class, stands out in a field historically dominated by male figures. Lauper’s flamboyant style and enduring impact on pop and rock music helped distinguish her among this year’s 14 nominees.
Outkast, the groundbreaking hip-hop duo from Atlanta, adds genre-bending depth to the 2025 class, following a recent trend of the Rock Hall broadening its definition of rock to include innovators from hip-hop, R&B, and alternative scenes.
According to USA Today’s Melissa Ruggieri, this year’s inductees reflect a return to a more conventional rock lineup, in contrast to the genre-diverse groups inducted in recent years.
When and Where to Watch the Ceremony
The official induction ceremony will take place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and will air live on Disney+ on November 8. A full replay will be available on Hulu the following day, and a condensed version will be broadcast later on ABC, though a date has not yet been announced.
Fan Favorites and Snubs
Despite enthusiastic fan support, Phish did not make the final list of inductees, despite leading the fan vote with nearly 330,000 votes, about 50,000 more than runner-up Bad Company. It marks the second time in recent memory that a fan-favorite failed to secure induction, echoing the experience of the Dave Matthews Band in 2020 (who were finally inducted in 2024).
Other notable artists who fell short this year include:
- The Black Crowes
- Billy Idol
- Maná
- Mariah Carey
- Oasis
- Joy Division/New Order
The fan vote concluded on April 21 after a two-month window. While the top seven fan vote-getters earn one additional vote in the final tally, this influence alone does not ensure a spot in the Hall.
Special Recognitions and Awards
Beyond the main performer inductions, several additional honors will be presented:
- Salt-N-Pepa and Warren Zevon will receive the Musical Influence Award
- Thom Bell, Nicky Hopkins, and Carol Kaye will be honored with the Musical Excellence Award
- Lenny Waronker, a respected producer and executive at DreamWorks and Warner Bros. Records, will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award for lifetime contributions to the industry
Eligibility and Selection Process
To be considered for induction, an artist or band must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the nomination year. More than 1,200 members—including artists, music historians, and industry professionals, vote on the final slate of inductees. Among them is Melissa Ruggieri, who reported extensively on this year’s selection for USA Today.
The 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class not only celebrates timeless rock legends but also underscores a continued evolution in how musical legacy is defined. As the music landscape continues to diversify, the Hall of Fame appears to be widening its lens, one inductee at a time.
